Keiken is a Japanese word that means, “one’s own experience,” and that is exactly what its namesake digital creative agency, Keiken Media (KM), aims to highlight through its productions. Co-founded by native New Yorker, Khoreen Eccleston, with the goal to promote the empathic nature of humans, KM has expanded to include services such as business, brand and web development, social media management, videography, event coordination, creative direction consultation; and, even sells its own line of streetwear. However, it is the foundation and mission of this business that sets it apart in its field.
As a Black, small-business owner, “health, wealth and sustainability are not only the pillars of the business, but how I have chosen to live my life as well,” said Eccleston. This lifestyle entails being conscious about “what you put into your body, to learning how to protect and nurture your energy to better amplify your output,” she continued. This level of authenticity – intentionally allowing your values to guide your movements – is most reflected in the stunningly bold, yet grounded confidence portrayed in KM’s online photo gallery.
Eccleston’s output was greatly inspired by her study abroad experience in Osaka, Japan. She was drawn to the country, and more specifically to embark on a visit to Tokyo, because of its global cultural impact. Having this solo 4-month adventure allowed Eccleston to appreciate a profound cultural exchange. “As souls/spirits in the physical vessel, our primary goal is to experience and transmute energy through our actions… Everyone is living their own truth, but (we) are connected by the totality of the human experience, which we all share together,” she said. “Sustainable living is essential if we want a future for ourselves as well as the entirety of the human race. Being stewards of the earth, in whatever capacity one can conceive, is crucial in understanding our place within the universe. We don’t exist separate from the earth, we exist because of it; Therefore, to destroy our planet is to destroy ourselves,” she continued.
Eccleston’s enigmatic wisdom lends itself to her energetic creativity, most notably expressed throughout the brand’s four apparel collections. Each design is an original creation by Eccleston, who was inspired by Basquiat, neo-expressionism, Japanese culture and the free-spirited sentiments of beach sunsets. It is admirable to witness the way Eccleston’s own curiosity and adventures have influenced her perspective on how to reciprocate loving energy back into the world. “Once you understand that we are all rich in spirit, you begin to think, act and manifest differently,” she concluded.
